Mary Martha Pope was born in Cisco, Texas on December 11, 1931, the daughter of Dale and Helen (Hannaford) Pope.
During the time Mary was growing up she attended school in Eunice, New Mexico, where she graduated in 1950. She and her husband, Roe Hurt, were high school sweethearts. They married in 1951 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Mary and Roe had three children:
Molly Lue Hurt
Joel Rob Hurt
Russell Ulus Hurt
All three were born in Fairfax, Oklahoma.
While her husband served in the United States Air Force, she lived with him and their family in Japan for two years. When they returned to the States they moved back to Fairfax where her husband owned and operated a Western Auto Store. As her children were growing up she was a homemaker. After the children were grown she and her sister shared the same occupation as nursing home administrators. Mary managed nursing homes in both Pawnee and Tulsa. After she retired Mary was a loving "other mother" to her two grandchildren, and took care of them during the day for several years while her son and his wife were working. She was an excellent seamstress, unafraid to tackle any pattern, and was an avid card player and excelled in Bridge. She competed in tournaments all over the United States. Mary liked to read and solve crossword puzzles, keeping up with current events, and watching football. She always had an entertaining way of relating events that made friends and family want to spend time with her.
Mary was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ponca City, OK on January 27, 1963. She enjoyed serving as a Home Primary Teacher and feeding the missionaries that came to her home.
In her later years Mary moved to Gautier, Mississippi to improve her health. She died after a lengthy illness on February 18th in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Molly Lue Hurt, and her brother, Tommy Pope.
She is survived by her husband, Ulus Roe Hurt of Jenks, Oklahoma; two sons - Joel Rob Hurt and his wife Linda of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Russell Ulus Hurt and his wife Kim of Jenks, Oklahoma; two grandchildren - Sean Hurt of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Rachel Hurt of Dallas, Texas; her sister Jo Garrison and her husband Bill of Ardmore, Oklahoma, as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax, Oklahoma. Bishop Jeff Sellers officiated. Services were entrusted to Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home of Fairfax, Oklahoma.
