Lawrence Ray Pickens, of Cumming, Georgia, reunited with his beloved wife, Mary in heaven early Friday morning August 23, 2019 at the age of 89. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside service will be held 10a.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at the Fairfax City Cemetery under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home in Fairfax, Oklahoma.
On Thursday, September 19, 1929 Lawrence was born to Francis Tarpley and Anna Ruth (Ray) Pickens in Weaverville, North Carolina. He and his sister shared many good memories of growing up. Lawrence, was also known as “Ray” to those who loved him most.
Following his High School graduation he worked on a Dairy Farm in Skyland, NC before joining the Army. Ray proudly served his country for two years during the Korean War Era being honorably discharged in 1953. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.
He met the love of his life and married Mary Jo Clay following her graduation of High School in the early 1960’s. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Marvilla who was the “apple of her daddy’s eye.”
While the couple were living at Windsor Hills Nursing Center in Oklahoma City, Mary passed on September 16, 2017. He later moved to Cumming, Georgia.
Lawrence will be forever remembered by his cherished daughter, Marvilla Pickens, of Del City, Okla.; a dear sister; adored niece and special caregiver, Cindy Hardie; and many treasured friends from Oklahoma.
