James Vernon Burgess

James Vernon Jim Burgess, fondly known as Pops, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on May 28, 2013.

He was born in Cleveland, Oklahoma on December 17, 1933 to George Vernon Burgess and Iva Ingle, but was raised by his mother and stepfather, who was his dad, Loyd Ricketts.

He attended Fairfax School and on February 17, 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on both the USS Boyd and USS McDermott. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Quartermaster on February 12, 1957. During his time of duty, he was awarded the China Service Medal, Korea Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Medal.

Shortly after returning from the Navy, he went to work at Fairfax Packing Company as a butcher until it was destroyed by fire in 1987. He loved that opportunity to see parts of the United States he had not been to before.
