Hazel Guthrie

May 20, 1914 — November 15, 2016

Hazel Rice was born on May 20th, 1914 at Wilson-Carter County Oklahoma. She was the 2nd of 6 children born to Earnest and Daisy Dean Rainey Rice. Soon after Hazel's birth the family moved north and settled in western Osage County in the Big Bend Area. Hazel attended school at Belford School in the Bend and Ralston High School. After high school graduation she attended Hills Business School in Oklahoma City.

On Dec. 28th, 1938 Hazel married George W. Goad in Newkirk, OK. The couple lived in the Bend area, was married 26 years and raised 4 children: Rosemary, Von, Ed and Sam.

Hazel worked most of her lifetime at various jobs, starting at home as a child she milked cows, sold eggs and cream, and also helped her father cultivate corn with a team of mules. Her first job outside of the home was at the Fairfax Hospital assisting with surgeries and taking care of babies. She later worked for the Osage County Sheriff's Department, working with Sheriff George Wayman. Later she moved to Pawnee where she worked for Muerer Abstract Office, then eventually the Department of Human services from where she retired.

On September 3rd, 1968 she married Amos Gusmon (Bill) Guthrie. The couple resided in Pawnee several years before moving south of Ralston and eventually to their home at 411 Skyview in Fairfax, OK.

Hazel enjoyed many hobbies and activities such as quilting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, reading, puzzles, dominoes and fishing. She made numerous quilts of her own and also with her former quilting group from the Ralston Sr. Citizens. She loved going to lunch and visiting with friends at the Fairfax Sr. Citizens. She was a lifelong member of the Ralston Bible Church and had in recent years joined the Centenarian Club of Oklahoma, having turned 100 years old in 2014.

Hazel witnessed many changes in the world throughout her lifetime. She had endured many challenges and overcome obstacles some of us can never imagine. When she was asked what is the greatest thing she ever witnessed?, she would simply answer "The love of family". When asked what she believes to be the hardest thing in life?, she said "To bury your children". Yet somehow Hazel always managed a smile and continued to get up every morning with a great attitude, drink her coffee and ride a mile on her stationary bike, read from her Bible and Thanked God for the blessings he had given her.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Rosemary Dilbeck; 1 son, Samuel Jack Goad and wife Janice; 1 daughter-in-law, Kelli Goad; 1 stepson, Bud Guthrie; 1 sister, Dean Littlestar and husband Al; 19 Grandchildren; numerous Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnest and Daisy Rice; husbands, George W. Goad and Bill Guthrie; 3 brothers, Orlean Rice, Elmer Rice and Virgil Rice; 1 sister, Ethel Yvonne Freeman; 1 daughter, Ethel Yvonne Kelley; 1 son, George Ed Goad; 1 step-daughter, Sue Blair; 3 Grandchildren, Jason Dilbeck, Brent Goad and Summer Goad Novotny.

Casket bearers will be Todd Kelly, Tim Dilbeck, Logan Dilbeck, Dylan Crabtree, David Crabtree, Dale Kelley II and Garrison Shears.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 in the Ralston Bible Church, Ralston, OK with Pastor Roy Emmons officiating. Burial will follow at the family cemetery north of Fairfax. Arrangements are under the direction of Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home of Fairfax.
