On the evening of Friday, May 24, 2024, Emma Lou Sawyers, 91, a longtime resident of Fairfax, Oklahoma, gracefully departed this earth into the loving arms of God. In heaven, she joyously reunited with her beloved husband "Jake," who greeted her at Heaven’s gate. Emma Lou was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Steven Sawyers, and siblings: Juanita, Artis, Loranie, O'Dell, Delmar, and Donald Gene.
Her funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Full Gospel Assembly of God in Fairfax on Friday, May 31, 2024. Pastor Lewis Bernard will lead the service with interment following at the city cemetery. It is there that she will find her final resting place beside her husband and son Steven.
Emma Lou entered this world in Wewoka, Okla. born on April 8th, 1933, to James Arie and Mary Elizabeth (Catlett) Yandell. The family later relocated to Fairfax where she spent her formative years and blossomed alongside her brothers and sisters.
Her heart found its true companion in Eddie G. "Jake" Sawyers whom she married in Fairfax on July 22, 1948. The couple had celebrated 70 years of marriage before Jake’s passing in June 2019. Together they navigated life's journey raising five remarkable children. Little did they foresee the multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who would bless their lives before their departure from this earth.
As a young adult, Emma Lou dedicated herself to caring for her family as a devoted mother and homemaker. Actively engaged in the Full Gospel Church community for many years—leading hymns in earlier times and later serving as church secretary—her contributions were deeply valued until her health declined.
During the early 1970s, she found fulfillment working at Blucher Boot Co., where her skilled hands created intricate western boots as a dedicated boot stitcher/seamstress for two decades. Known for generously sharing her mastery with newcomers to the craftmanship, Emma Lou's artistry even graced custom boots for Roy Clark displayed proudly at the Country Music Hall of Fame—a stunning pair featuring a butterfly motif in hues of yellow and gold chosen to complement Roy's attire.
A lady of serene disposition and simple pleasures, Emma Lou reveled in fishing and hunting excursions shared with her husband and dear kin throughout her life. At the age of 77, she claimed one final shot during deer season—an accomplishment that brought both pride and fond memories to all who knew her.
Left behind to cherish Emma Lou's memory are daughters Margaret (Roger) Davey, Barbara (Gary) Clement, Annette (Luke) Lewis; son David Sawyers; sister Betty Barden; as well as numerous grandchildren across three generations—their presence is a testament to a life lived with devotion and love. Additionally, countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hunsaker Wooten Funeral Home; condolences and remembrances may be shared online at
