Today our community mourns the loss of Donald James Davis of Fairfax, Oklahoma who has gone to be with the Lord. He was 83 years 8 months and 11 days old.
Donald, affectionately known to family as “D.J.” and around town as “Don,” was born on Friday, October 4, 1935 to James Robert Davis and Wanda Lee (Peterson) Davis in Jay, Oklahoma. After graduating High School in 1954 at Denver, Colorado Don joined the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for four years before being honorably discharged and awarded the China Service Medal.
Coming to Fairfax in the 1970’s, he worked for many years in construction as a carpenter. Retiring to his most recent home, he installed sky lights in the roof and a water collecting system inside for watering his plants. It was built to be very energy efficient. He was an innovator and described by a friend “as always ahead of his time.”
Don had a passion for nurturing and growing things. He grafted miniature trees, raised honey bees, grew numerous vegetables and cane in his backyard through the years. He was also very fond of his “home grown” tobacco.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his brother, Dale W. Davis.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his sister, Angeline Zimmer of Hampton, Virginia; two nieces, Leanne and husband Douglas Eure of Hampton, Va. and Leslye Susan Deer of Mississippi; three nephews, Donald G. and wife Jiping Thornhill of Houston, Texas, Scott Paul Thornhill of Tulsa, Okla., Martin and wife Ginger Davis of Colorado; as well as many cousins and friends in the Fairfax area.
Don’s wishes were to be cremated and his family has chosen to honor his wishes. No formal services are planned at this time. Cremation is entrusted to Hunsaker-Wooten Funeral Home.
