Calvin Steinberger

April 4, 1929 — June 21, 2019

Fairfax

Calvin Clinton Steinberger, long time resident of Fairfax, OK died peacefully in his sleep June 21, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

Cal was born April 4, 1929 in Hays, Kansas to Clint and Frances Terrell Steinberger. After moving to Houston, TX, he graduated from Lamar High School and was offered a football scholarship by Bud Wilkinson to play for the University of Oklahoma. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1951.

While at OU, he met the love of his life, Margaret Scott Mathis and they married December 28, 1949 in Fairfax, OK.

After graduating from OU, Cal worked for the Standard of Texas oil company in Houston prior to joining the family oil business. While living in Houston, he and Margaret had 3 girls, Lynn, Peggy and Gail. In 1963, he moved his family to Fairfax to help manage the family ranch where he was an active member of the Fairfax community, serving on the hospital board, Chamber of Commerce and in the Presbyterian Church.

Calvin loved his country and was active in politics, serving as the Osage County Chairman for the Republican Party and as a delegate to several Republican National Conventions.

Papa Cal had a lifelong love of learning- getting his pilot's license, becoming a ham radio operator and always tinkering and coming up with new ideas in his ham shack. He loved playing golf and bridge with his friends, walking his beloved dogs and spending time with his wife of 70 years and family.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Mathis Steinberger, daughters Lynn (husband Perry) of Hernando, FL, Peggy (husband Doug) of Tulsa, OK and Gail (husband Phil) of Lewisville, TX along with 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and sister Kay Troutman of OKC.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, sister Jean DeLue and grandson, Scott Edmiston. As a family of believers, we know Papa Cal is HOME and we look forward to being together one day soon.
